KATHMANDU: Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has moved the Patan High Court challenging the Kathmandu District Court’s decision to impose an 8-year prison sentence in a rape case.

The Kathmandu District Court had recently convicted Sandeep, imposing an 8-year imprisonment term, a fine of 3 lakh rupees, and a compensation of 2 lakh rupees.

Sandeep’s legal representative, Murari Sapkota, confirmed the filing of a petition in the High Court, urging the court to overturn the decision and acquit Sandeep.

“We have submitted the application, and it is currently in the process of being registered,” stated Sapkota.

Accompanied by his legal team, Sandeep appeared before the High Court to formally submit the petition.

The Kathmandu District Court had based its conviction on allegations of coercion, asserting that Sandeep exploited the victim’s financial situation and exerted undue influence.

Contrary to the district court’s findings, Sandeep’s application to the High Court contends that there is no substantiated evidence supporting the financial coercion mentioned in the verdict.

Sandeep claims that the district court’s assertion of a demand or offer of financial transactions lacks foundation.
