Mpox infection reappears

KATHMANDU: The government has confirmed the re-emergence of monkeypox (Mpox) in the country.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a 36-year-old man from Tanahun district has tested positive for the infection.

The man, who returned from Saudi Arabia on Thursday, underwent a lab test at the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, said Ministry spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki.

He is currently receiving medical care in isolation at the Shree Haraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, and his condition is not life-threatening.

Nepal recorded its first case of Mpox in June 2023, involving a foreign national who had arrived in the country.

Following the detection of this new case, the government has instructed relevant authorities to set up health desks at Tribhuvan International Airport and other transit points to prevent the further spread of the infection.
