KATHMANDU: On Sunday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli unveiled a seven-point agreement reached between the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML during a parliamentary meeting.

Seeking a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives (HoR), PM Oli publicly detailed the agreement made with Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the Nepali Congress, before the formation of the new government.

Key Points of the Agreement:

Formation of National Consensus Government: A national consensus government will be formed under Article 76(2) of the Constitution to ensure political stability by involving other political parties. This government aims to safeguard national interests by controlling corruption, ensuring good governance, and accelerating national development and construction efforts.

Review and Amendments to the Constitution: The consensus government will review the strengths, weaknesses, and complexities that have emerged since the Constitution’s implementation. It will focus on making necessary amendments to the Constitution and enacting related laws to ensure political stability.

Economic Revival: The government will address the current economic sluggishness by creating a reliable business environment, stimulating economic activities, encouraging both internal and external investment, and generating ample and respectable employment opportunities within the country.

Leadership Transition: The national consensus government will be led by CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli for the first two years. Following this period, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba will assume leadership until the general elections in December 2027.

Operational Foundation: The government will operate based on a formulated minimum common program and governance framework to ensure national interests are safeguarded, corruption is controlled, and good governance is maintained.

Equal Participation: The two major political parties will play leading roles and have equal participation in the government, with other political parties also being included.

Provincial and Local Development: The national consensus government will form and operate the provincial government in line with the essence and spirit of the consensus agreement, focusing on accelerating development and construction at the provincial and local levels according to public sentiment.
