NHRC requests Home Ministry for details on Ruby Khan’s hunger strike and agreement

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over the hunger strike and protests in Kathmandu by Ruby Khan and other women from Banke, who are seeking justice for Nirmala Kurmi.

NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel issued a statement on Friday, directing the Home Ministry to provide details of Khan’s hunger strike and the agreement reached with her.

The NHRC has been monitoring the protests by Ruby Khan and her group since 2021, which demand justice for Nirmala Kurmi’s abduction and property seizure.

The NHRC’s Nepalgunj branch is currently investigating a complaint related to this issue.

The NHRC noted that a Home Ministry investigation committee was formed on October 19, 2021, recommending the prosecution and investigation of those responsible.

Despite previous agreements between government representatives and the protesters, these have not been implemented.

Ruby Khan has been on a hunger strike in Kathmandu since June 7, with the NHRC team visiting her at Bir Hospital on June 19 to gather information.

The NHRC has formally requested the Home Ministry to provide, within seven days, details of the agreements and the progress on implementing the committee’s recommendations, as per Article 249 of the Constitution.
