KATHMANDU: The Nepal Police has urged journalists to exercise restraint when reporting on cases that are under investigation.

In an interaction organized by the Nepal Police’s Department of Crime Investigation today, journalists were cautioned to be careful in covering ongoing investigations.

Chief of the Department and Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police Tek Bahadur Tamang emphasized that publishing news stories based solely on hints and suspicions about someone’s involvement could lead to misunderstandings and confusion among readers.

Therefore, he urged media professionals to exercise caution when disseminating such news.

He also mentioned that the Nepal Police is committed to providing accurate information on matters of public concern.

Similarly, Mahendra Raj Singh, the monitoring chief at the Press Council Nepal, stated that the council has been developing a code of conduct in accordance with the Press Council Act-2048 BS and monitoring compliance by media and journalists.

He emphasized that the council takes action against media outlets that violate the code of conduct.

Sharada Chalise, an officer at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, mentioned that the ministry is focused on ensuring the dissemination of factual and credible news.

She highlighted that the ministry regularly organizes press briefings to inform the public about decisions made during Cabinet meetings.

However, journalists participating in the interaction expressed concerns about the tendency of public offices to withhold information, stating that it violates the public’s right to information.
