KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized the imperative need to eliminate all forms of discrimination against humanity during a function commemorating the 59th International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Dahal underscored that the achievements of societal change cannot be safeguarded until discrimination is eradicated completely.
Despite constitutional guarantees of fundamental rights for the Dalit community, caste-based discrimination persists, leading to social injustices and violations.
Expressing concern over the ongoing cases of insult, suppression, exploitation, social exclusion, and violence against the Dalit community, Prime Minister Dahal called for collective efforts to combat biases, including gender-based, linguistic, and regional discrimination, to foster an inclusive and discrimination-free society.
Recognizing the significant contributions of the Dalit community to political transformations, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of mainstreaming their involvement in building a federal, inclusive, democratic republic, ensuring proportional representation.
Highlighting the state’s responsibility to prosecute perpetrators of caste-based discrimination and untouchability, Prime Minister Dahal emphasized every citizen’s inherent right to equality and independence. However, he noted that Nepali society still grapples with remnants of a mindset rooted in slavery.
In advocating for effective implementation of constitutional and legal provisions promoting Dalit rights, Prime Minister Dahal proposed launching a social awakening and political campaign, coupled with rigorous law enforcement, to eradicate caste-based discrimination, a crime against humanity.
