Kathmandu under a blanket of pollution (Photos)

KATHMANDU: Every winter, the Kathmandu Valley, with its bowl-like topography, becomes enveloped in pollution.

As the monsoon rains subside, the air quality deteriorates significantly in this city, home to nearly 4 million people, due to a combination of seasonal and human activities.

Currently, Kathmandu ranks 14th among the most polluted cities in the world.

According to IQAir, a Swiss company that monitors air quality, the city is experiencing record levels of pollution this winter, rendering the air unhealthy, especially for sensitive populations.

In previous years, Kathmandu has recorded dangerously high pollution levels, even ranking as the most polluted city globally.

Polluted air has led to a surge in health problems, affecting breathing, eyes, and skin for many residents.

On October 26, Kathmandu was ranked 25th among the world’s most polluted cities, but it has since climbed to sixth place.

A thick layer of polluted haze now blankets the valley, visibly impacting the skyline.
