KATHMANDU: Maoist Centre Chairman and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ emphasized the growing importance of declaring Nepal a zone of peace.

While receiving a memorandum from the citizen-led Zone of Peace Campaign, Dahal stated that the time has come to advocate for this proposal to safeguard national autonomy amid an increasingly hostile global political landscape.

He noted that the zone of peace initiative could serve as a crucial agenda for national preservation.

“During the Panchayat era, there were mixed opinions on this proposal due to the political climate, and no party could fully support it. However, in today’s transformed political context, the significance of the zone of peace proposal is rising for the protection of our independence,” he asserted.

Dahal indicated that discussions are underway within the party regarding the declaration of Nepal as a zone of peace.

“I support open discussions on this topic, and we will develop a clear stance from the party,” he said, suggesting that this issue could be proposed during the upcoming central committee meeting.

He highlighted the importance of positioning Lumbini as the central focus of the peace zone initiative and regarded grassroots discussions on this matter as a positive development.
