Durga Prasai to face cybercrime charges

KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police is set to file charges against controversial medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, citing three offenses: cybercrime, forgery of documents, and defamation.

CIB spokesperson SP Hobindra Bogati stated that Prasai was arrested for allegedly spreading misinformation against Prime Minister KP Oli using forged documents.

Prasai had conducted a YouTube conference from his residence in Bhaktapur, where he claimed that Oli, the chairman of the CPN-UML, had invested 32 billion Nepali rupees in Cambodia’s telecom sector.

Prasai was arrested on Tuesday on charges of making controversial allegations about Prime Minister KP Oli.

He was taken into custody by a team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police at his home in Bhaktapur.

A CIB representative stated that Prasai’s arrest is part of an investigation into the distribution of fake videos and documents related to Prime Minister Oli.

He reportedly enlisted several YouTubers to spread misinformation, claiming that Oli had invested billions in Cambodia.

On Monday, Prasai posted on Facebook, asserting that PM Oli had made substantial investments, and he also shared a video titled “KP Oli’s Investment in Cambodia: The True Character of the Prime Minister.”

Anticipating his arrest, Prasai warned on social media that he might be detained, saying, “Yesterday, after revealing the issue of KP Oli’s investment in Cambodia during a press conference, the state government is preparing to arrest me again on false charges. I urge everyone to stay alert and vigilant, as I might be arrested for cybercrime, treason, or other accusations.”

Prasai, who owns B&C Medical College in Jhapa, was previously arrested for cybercrime and character assassination but was released on bail of one lakh rupees. Since then, he has become increasingly critical of Oli.
