KHOTANG: Despite the inauguration of a test flight at Lamidanda Airport, the oldest airport in Khotang, on 3 Asar 2076 BS following its blacktopping, regular flights remain uncertain.
The test flight was conducted on the same day that blacktopping was completed, with a total investment of Rs 67.7 million from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
During the test flight’s inauguration, Constituent Assembly (CA) member Bishal Bhattarai indicated that discussions were ongoing with CAAN to initiate regular flights.
However, no aircraft have taken off or landed at the airport since then.
The airport’s turning pad, which had been in a raw state since its operation began in 2028 BS, was blacktopped with a 28-meter extension on both sides.
The airport was originally constructed to facilitate access for devotees and tourists visiting Halesi, the district’s main religious and tourist destination, as well as for residents of Okhaldhunga and Solukhumbu districts.
Local efforts to build the airport began in 2026 BS, using local resources, leading to its operational status two years later.
Currently, locals face significant challenges due to the absence of regular flights.
In emergencies, such as critical illnesses or injuries, residents are forced to charter helicopters to transport patients to other locations for treatment.
Phatik Kumar Shrestha, Chief of Rawabesi Rural Municipality, criticized the state for what he described as a severe injustice by reducing flight services at the airport.
He expressed frustration with the lack of interest from relevant authorities in reopening the blacktopped airport, despite repeated requests from the community.
Additionally, locals noted that employees and equipment of the airport have been relocated following the suspension of flights.
Lawmaker Ram Kumar Rai ‘Pasang’ stated that efforts are being made to investigate the reasons behind the reduction in flights.
He expressed regret that Lamidanda Airport, which was upgraded with state funds, has been non-operational for the past six years.
Khotang district is served by three airports, each constructed with the aim of providing air services to local residents.
All three airports, including Lamidanda, have been blacktopped with investment from CAAN.
