Ten people killed in elephant attacks in Koshi Province over the past year



JHAPA: Ten people lost their lives, and 25 others were injured in elephant attacks in Koshi Province during the fiscal year 2023/24.

According to the Province Police Office in Biratnagar, five elephants also died during this period.

The fatalities included residents of Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari, with six people from Jhapa, three from Sunsari, and one from Morang killed in the attacks, according to spokesperson Bhim Bahadur Dahal.

In November last year, a herd of over 35 elephants caused significant loss of lives and property.

Additionally, four elephants died in Jhapa and one in Morang during the same fiscal year, spokesperson Dahal reported.

The injuries from elephant attacks included 14 people in Jhapa, one in Ilam, three in Morang, five in Sunsari, and two in Udaypur.

The government provides one million rupees as compensation to the families of those killed in elephant attacks.

According to the Division Forest Office in Jhapa, injured individuals receive between Rs 25,000 to Rs 100,000 for their treatment.
