Lawmakers protest police crackdown on scrap dealers

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have expressed strong objections to the police crackdown on scrap dealers who were staging a peaceful protest on Tuesday.

They have also demanded proper medical treatment for those injured in the police action.

During the special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Prabhu Sah, Chairperson of the Aam Janata Party, stated that over 50 scrap dealers were injured due to the police’s brutal crackdown.

Sah demanded a response from Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane regarding the police action and called for those involved in the crackdown to be held accountable.

He emphasized that the police intervention was unconstitutional and undemocratic, violating the Nepali people’s rights to peaceful protest.

Sah highlighted the need for guarantees of the safety and livelihood of Nepali citizens.

Similarly, independent lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Dr. Amresh Kumar Singh expressed outrage over the police’s actions against the protesters, who were demonstrating against the removal of their businesses despite a court order allowing them to operate.

Singh criticized the administration’s policy of using force against people from the Madhes region and called for free medical treatment for the injured.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the police intervened as scrap dealers attempted to encircle the Kathmandu Metropolitan City office in protest against the decision to remove their businesses from the metropolis.
