NC accuses Gandaki and Sudurpaschim province chiefs of unconstitutional moves

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC), the main opposition party, has expressed grave concerns over recent decisions made by the Gandaki and Sudurpaschim Province Chiefs, alleging that they are unconstitutional.

During a press conference held at the party’s central office on Friday, NC spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat highlighted the actions taken by the Provincial Chiefs in Gandaki and Sudurpaschim provinces, condemning them as objectionable and unconstitutional.

Dr. Mahat accused the Provincial Chiefs of disregarding the constitution and flouting orders from the Supreme Court (SC).

He stressed that NC would not participate in the Gandaki Province Assembly until the scheduled SC order is delivered in the upcoming week.

Regarding the government formation in Sudurpaschim Province, Dr. Mahat criticized the decision to invite a government without following the protocol outlined in Article 168(2) of the Constitution, alleging an abuse of authority by the Province Chief.

Dr. Mahat also underscored the importance of granting special powers to the Provincial Chiefs in the process of forming provincial governments and criticized efforts to form governments under ruling coalitions in the provinces.

He cautioned that such actions would undermine federalism and lead to disillusionment among the public.

He emphasized that NC would not engage in any political maneuvering to form an unnatural coalition government, as such actions would inevitably result in instability.
