Resolution proposal tabled in Koshi provincial assembly meeting

KATHMANDU: A resolution proposal has been tabled in a meeting of the Koshi Provincial Assembly, marking a significant development in the region’s political landscape.

Indra Angbo, parliamentary party leader of the Maoist Center in the province, announced that the proposal, previously submitted by CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) to the Koshi Province secretariat, was presented during the assembly meeting on Friday.

The provincial assembly currently reflects a substantial opposition presence, with the number of lawmakers opposing the ruling parties nearly doubling.

With 39 lawmakers from UML, 13 from the Maoist Center, five from Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and one from Janata Samajbadi Party, the dynamics in the 93-member assembly are complex.

Additionally, Nepali Congress holds 29 seats, while CPN (Unified Socialist) has four.

Political uncertainty has gripped the Koshi Province since the withdrawal of support by the Maoist Center and CPN-UML for Chief Minister Kedar Karki, leaving the provincial government in a state of flux.

Chief Minister Karki maintains that the constitution does not necessitate his removal and argues against the need for a vote of confidence for two years.

Conversely, UML and Maoist Center leaders assert that with their withdrawal of support, the government is now a minority and must seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly.

Chief Minister Karki remains adamant, citing Article 168, Clause 5 of the Constitution to support his position and arguing against the constitutionality of demands for his resignation within the first two years of his tenure.
