Prime Minister Oli and NC President Deuba hold talks at Baluwatar

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba are holding a meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar this evening.

Initially scheduled for 6 PM, the meeting was delayed by an hour as Deuba was engaged in internal discussions with Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and other Congress leaders. The leaders convened at 7 PM.

The discussion focuses on reshuffling the cabinet, with sources close to Prime Minister Oli confirming ongoing deliberations.

Reports suggest that at least three ministers each from UML and Congress may be replaced to address dissatisfaction over their performance.

The meeting also includes talks on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) ahead of Prime Minister Oli’s scheduled visit to China on December 2.

If Congress agrees, Oli is expected to sign agreements advancing BRI projects during his visit.

However, concerns persist over whether the BRI will involve loans or grants.

Oli, who assumed office for the fourth time on July 14 following an agreement between UML and Congress, has faced criticism for the government’s slow start.

Even while presenting the 100-day progress report, he acknowledged that the government had struggled to gain momentum.

The government, nearing a two-thirds majority, has yet to address pressing economic issues effectively, drawing widespread criticism.

In this context, the two leaders are seeking solutions, including possible changes in ministerial leadership.
