Arrest of Rabi Lamichhane is a strategy to shield embezzlers from accountability: RSP

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has asserted that the arrest of its Chairman, Rabi Lamichhane, marks the beginning of a process to grant immunity to those involved in the embezzlement of Rs 87 billion in cooperative funds.

Following Lamichhane’s arrest on Friday evening, the RSP released a statement claiming that “by arresting Chairman Lamichhane without reason or basis, the game of providing immunity to the embezzlers of Rs 87 billion—money belonging to the common people invested in cooperatives—has commenced.”

Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha noted in the statement that “the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee has confirmed that there is no involvement in cooperative fraud.”

“While the Committee has confirmed there is no involvement in cooperative fraud, we believe that arresting the chairman in this case is a politically biased move,” the statement continued.

“However, RSP is always ready to assist the investigation of the state’s judicial bodies while respecting the rule of law. Nonetheless, we will never accept political revenge against our party and our chairman by exploiting loopholes in the law.”

The RSP has also accused “parties that have protected and colluded with each other in mutual understanding regarding scams worth billions, such as the Giribandhu, Bhutanese refugee case, Teramox, and widebody plane purchase,” of attacking the new political campaign.

Furthermore, the party has called on its workers and the public to “stand up against the political fraud that has persisted for decades.”
