Monsoon disasters claim 182 lives, 233 injured, and cause extensive damage across Nepal

The death toll from this year’s monsoon-induced disasters has risen to 182 as of this afternoon. The casualties, resulting from landslides and floods since June 10, include three individuals from the Kathmandu Valley, according to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dan Bahadur Karki, Spokesperson of the Nepal Police. The fatalities have been distributed across various provinces as follows: Koshi Province: 27, Madhes Province: 8, Bagmati Province: 32, Gandaki Province: 55, Lumbini Province: 36, Karnali Province: 10 and Sudurpaschim Province: 11.

Foreign Minister Rana to meet Indian PM Modi on Monday

Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba is set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday evening at 7 PM. Minister Rana is currently in India on an official visit at the invitation of Dr. S. Jaishankar, the Indian Minister of External Affairs. During the meeting, Minister Deuba will extend an invitation to Prime Minister Modi on behalf of her Nepali counterpart, KP Sharma Oli.

Corruption case filed against Ex-DIG Ramesh Kharel amidst allegations against Kulman Ghising

A corruption case has been filed against former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Ramesh Kharel, who recently accused Kulman Ghising, the Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), of corruption. The case was filed by Yubraj Safal at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Sunday. Safal has alleged that Kharel was involved in corrupt activities involving millions of rupees. This development comes after Kharel himself filed a corruption case against Ghising at the CIAA on August 13.

Nepal kicks off SAFF U-20 Championship with 1-0 victory over Sri Lanka

Nepal began their SAFF U-20 Championship campaign with a 1-0 win against Sri Lanka in the tournament’s opening match. The match’s only goal, scored by Nirajan Dham in the first half, proved decisive. This victory puts Nepal in a strong position to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the championship. Nepal will face Bangladesh in their second group stage match on Thursday. In the other group stage matches, India will play against Bhutan on Monday.

Nepali students spend Rs 125.13 billion on foreign education in FY 2023/24

The Nepal Rastra Bank released the “Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal” report on Sunday, highlighting a significant increase in expenditures by Nepali students for foreign education. In the fiscal year 2023/24, Nepali students spent Rs 125.13 billion on overseas education, up from Rs 100.42 billion in the previous year. The report also indicates a substantial rise in travel-related payments, which increased by 31.1 percent to Rs 189.43 billion, compared to Rs 144.52 billion in the prior year.

Court orders Bechan Jha’s custody in fake Bhutanese refugee case

The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the detention of Bechan Jha in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee case. The order was issued by Judge Tirtha Raj KC, who ruled to keep Jha in custody. Bechan Jha, who had been evading arrest, was apprehended on June 29 in Kanchanpur. He is accused of acting as a mediator, facilitating meetings between brokers and high-ranking officials, including the Home Minister and the Secretary, as part of the scam involving fake Bhutanese refugees.

Funds misappropriation: Parliamentary Committee takes statement from RSP Joint General Secretary

The special parliamentary inquiry committee investigating the misappropriation of savings funds from cooperatives has taken a statement from Bipin Acharya, the Joint General Secretary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Acharya’s statement was recorded during a committee meeting held at Singha Durbar on Sunday. Previously, Acharya served as a Creative Director at Gorkha Media Network, where GB Rai, who is currently absconding, was the Chairman. Rabi Lamichhane, the current RSP Chairman, served as the Managing Director of the Gorkha Media Network. The committee had also scheduled to question RSP Chairman Lamichhane on Sunday.

Remittances increase by 16.5 percent in 2023/24

Remittance inflows increased by 16.5 percent in the fiscal year 2023/24 compared to an increase of 23.2 percent in the previous year. According to data released by Nepal Rastra Bank, the total remittance received amounted to NPR 1445.32 billion during 2023/24. In comparison, the previous year saw a higher increase of 23.2 percent in remittance inflows. In the US Dollar terms, remittance inflows increased 14.5 percent to 10.86 billion in the review year compared to an increase of 13.9 percent in the previous year, according to NRB. During the review period, the number of Nepalis obtaining their final work permit (both institutional and individual-new) for foreign employment was 460,103.

NEA extends national grid power to Gosainkunda first time

For the first time, electricity from the national transmission line has reached Gosainkunda, the famous holy site in Rasuwa district of Bagmati province. This will make it easier for the pilgrims to reach Gosainkunda. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has been on a mission to supply power to remote areas. With this, it has brought relief to pilgrims besides locals after supplying electricity to Gosainkunda for the first time, it is learnt. Electricity service has brought into operation since Friday evening at the area which is 4,380 meters above the sea level. With the arrival of electric lights, the Gosainkunda area has become sparkling.

Prachanda slams NC-UML coalition as unholy and malicious

Chairman of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ has emphasized that the groundwork for the campaign to engage with the people has been laid through the process of strengthening and unifying the party. Prachanda made these remarks during a program held at the party headquarters in Parisdanda, commemorating Ram Briksha Yadav, a central member of Ekta-Kendra who was martyred in 2051 BS. In his address, Prachanda highlighted Yadav’s significant contributions to the Madhesh area in laying the foundation for the “people’s war”. Chairman Prachanda also affirmed the Maoist Center’s commitment to fortifying its struggle to protect the people’s issues.

Foreign Minister Rana leaves for India

Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba left for an official visit to India today. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister Rana is visiting India at the invitation of the Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar. During her visit, Minister Deuba will hold discussions with her Indian counterpart on matters of mutual interest, focusing on further strengthening Nepal-India relations and enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

Husband allegedly beats wife to death in Mahottari

A man from Sonukhada village in Mahottari Rural Municipality-1 has been charged with beating his wife to death. According to Superintendent of Police Nakul Pokharel of the District Police Office, 45-year-old Habib Nadaf allegedly assaulted his 36-year-old wife, Roshana Khatun, leading to her death. The incident occurred on Saturday, reportedly following a domestic dispute. Police suspect that Roshana Khatun’s death may have been due to a lack of timely medical treatment.

Tourist numbers surge at Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

The Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, spanning the districts of Rukum East, Baglung, and Myagdi, has seen a significant increase in domestic tourist arrivals recently. Traditionally popular among foreign tourists for hunting, the reserve is now attracting more domestic visitors as well. According to Conservation Officer Mandip Pangeni, the number of tourists visiting Dhorpatan doubled in the fiscal year 2080/081 compared to 2079/080. The reserve welcomed 15,573 tourists in 2080/081, up from 7,645 in the previous fiscal year. The growth is even more remarkable when looking further back: 9,919 domestic tourists visited in 2078/79, 6,703 in 2077/078, and only 3,020 in 2076/077.
