Minister Gurung orders immediate restoration of communication services in flood-affected Thame

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has directed the swift restoration of communication services in Thame village, Solukhumbu district, following a flash flood caused by the outburst of two small glacial lakes on August 16.

The flood severely damaged Thame village in Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, disrupting essential services.

Minister Gurung issued the order after local representatives informed him of the incident and the subsequent disruption of communication services in the touristic village of Thame.

The flood not only damaged individual and public infrastructure but also severely impacted a power house, leading to outages in electricity and telecommunications.

The headworks of the Khumbu Electricity Company were among the critical infrastructure damaged by the flood, exacerbating the power and communication service disruptions in wards 3, 4, and 5 of the rural municipality.

Local representatives urged Minister Gurung to ensure the immediate resumption of telephone and internet services by arranging alternative energy sources.

In response, telecommunication service providers Nepal Telecom and Ncell have been instructed to urgently explore alternatives to restore communication services.

Meanwhile, Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, has directed the concerned authorities to promptly resume electricity services in Thame.

Minister Khadka contacted Kulman Ghising, Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, emphasizing the need for urgent action to restore electricity in the flood-affected village.
