KATHMANDU: Chief Minister of Madhes Province, Satish Kumar Singh, has called for life imprisonment for those involved in corruption, arguing that current punishments are too lenient.

Speaking at a province-level interaction on corruption control and good governance organized by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) in Janakpurdham on Monday, Singh said a 10-year jail sentence is insufficient and harsher penalties are needed.

Singh criticized the existing legal framework, claiming it enables politicians and government employees to lead luxurious lives through corruption.

He also said that low salaries contribute to bribery and suggested increasing employees’ pay to reduce corruption. Additionally, he stressed the need to effectively enforce the Right to Information (RTI) to ensure a more transparent system.

CIAA Commissioner Jay Bahadur Chand, who also attended the event, warned against dismissing anonymous complaints, arguing that doing so could increase corruption.

The event was attended by provincial ministers, Chief District Officer Ramu Raj Kadariya, the chief of the district coordination committee, the mayor of Janakpurdham Sub-metropolis, and other local representatives.
