KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) of Nepal has asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to share the details of Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) quitting their Nepali citizenship obtained before acquiring the NRN Citizenship.

A meeting of the EC held Thursday sought such details for the purpose of updating the voters’ namelist for the by-elections of the local levels.

The EC Spokesperson, Narayan Prasad Sapkota, said that the District Administration Offices should share the details of those quitting the Nepali citizenship as per the law.

The EC has directed the Home Ministry to furnish the lists of those quitting the Nepali citizenship by October 21 to the District Election Offices via the District Administration Offices.

According to the legal provision, the NRNs should furnish the evidence of acquittal of Nepali citizenship, if they had taken before, for getting the NRN Citizenship.

The EC would update the voters’ namelist by omitting the names of those getting NRN Citizenship.

Meanwhile, the EC has directed the political parties to file the nomination of the candidates for the local levels’ by-elections to be held on December 1 ensuring the women’s candidacy.
In fielding the candidacy of chiefs and deputies in the local levels, the political parties should mandatorily field women’s candidacy too, EC Spokesperson Sapkota said.
