Cold storage facility with 3,000 metric tons capacity in operation in West Nawalparasi

NAWALPARASI: A cold storage facility with a capacity of 3,000 metric tons has been constructed and put into operation in Sunwal municipality-2 of the district.

The cold storage was built with joint investment from the federal, local governments, and cooperatives, according to Bimala Aryal, chairperson of the municipality.

The cold storage was constructed at a cost of Rs. 194.2 million. The storage is built on a plot of land of 10158.945 square meters, and has five chambers.

Currently, only one chamber is in operation, where farmers and traders have store 250 sacks of potatoes, said Jay Sheshmani Patel, the manager of the District Cooperative Cold Storage.

According to Patel, the District Cooperative Union Limited’s cold storage is among the largest in the country in terms of capacity. The federal government provided a 60 per cent grant for its construction, with local cooperatives and the local government contributing 20 per cent each.

Patel mentioned that if all five chambers of the cold storage are brought into use, it could generate an annual revenue of Rs 25 million.

Previously, farmers had to transport their agricultural produce to cold storages outside the district due to the lack of such facilities. The newly operational cold storage is designed to accommodate agricultural produce farmers in Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, and Kapilvastu districts.
