Defense Minister Rai visits flood-hit Khumbu, distributes monetary relief

KATHMANDU: The flood-affected residents of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu district received monetary assistance today.

Each affected household was provided Rs 50,000 from the local government and Rs 15,000 from the District Disaster Rescue Committee.

Defense Minister Man Bir Rai visited the flood-hit Khumbu village, accompanied by Sonam Sherpa, Chairperson of the Federalism Strengthening and National Concern Committee of the federal parliament.

Both officials directed local authorities to intensify rescue and relief operations.

The sudden flood in the Thame rivulet caused extensive damage, destroying 20 houses, including hotels, a clinic, and a school building.

The entire village has been reduced to a mass of debris, displacing approximately 100 people.

Chairperson Sherpa emphasized the urgency of resettling the displaced families and has informed the National Disaster Reduction and Management Authority.

The Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and local representatives are actively providing assistance to those in need.

The flood also damaged a bridge and disrupted the popular ‘Three Pass’ trekking route to Namche, cutting off access to the area.

Locals suspect that one of the four glacial lakes in the region burst, causing the flash flood.

Lawmaker Sherpa suggested that all three tiers of government should collaborate to ensure the safe relocation of the affected people.
