KATHMANDU: Senior Advocate Ramesh Badal has been appointed as the Attorney General by President Ramchandra Paudel on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Oli on Wednesday.
The Attorney General serves as the chief legal advisor to the government.
The constitutional provision allows the President to appoint the Attorney General on the Prime Minister’s recommendation.
Previously, Dr. Dinmani Pokharel resigned from the position on July 14 following a change in government.
Pokharel, appointed at the recommendation of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, resigned upon Prime Minister Oli’s appointment.
Badal had previously been appointed as the Attorney General for the first time on March 19, 2021, under the Oli government. However, following the Supreme Court’s verdict overturning the Oli government, he resigned.
Badal resigned on July 13, 2021, after serving for approximately four months in his first term.
Badal is an active member involved in the coalition building between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML.
From UML, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali played roles in garnering consensus with the Congress.
On July 1, in the early hours, Badal also participated in reaching a consensus with NC and UML at a businessman’s residence with seven agreements.
