Monsoon mayhem: Death toll rises to 120

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police stated that seven individuals lost their lives due to monsoon-induced disasters across the country in the past 24 hours.

This brings the total number of fatalities related to landslides, floods, and inundations since the onset of the monsoon season in Nepal this year to 120.

Monsoon arrived in Nepal on June 10, triggering various natural calamities.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki, spokesperson for Nepal Police, 135 people have been injured in these incidents during this period.

The casualties and injuries were distributed across provinces as follows: two deaths in Kathmandu Valley, 22 in Koshi Province, five in Madhesh Province, 15 in Bagmati Province, 38 in Gandaki Province, 23 in Lumbini Province, seven in Karnali Province, and eight in Sudurpaschim Province.

Similarly, among the injured, eight were from Kathmandu Valley, 34 from Koshi Province, nine from Madhesh Province, seven from Bagmati Province, 28 from Gandaki Province, nine from Lumbini Province, 29 from Karnali Province, and 11 from Sudurpaschim Province.

The disasters have also claimed the lives of 581 livestock and caused extensive damage to infrastructure including houses, bridges, schools, public offices, and cattle sheds.

Approximately 3,652 families have been displaced as a result of these calamities.

Nepal Police are engaged in search, rescue, and relocation operations, as well as clearing obstructions on roads caused by the disasters.
