Karnali province generates only three billion rupees internal revenue in six years

BHERIGANGA: The Karnali provincial government has generated a mere three billion rupees in internal revenue over the past six years.

From the establishment of the provincial government until the end of May in the current fiscal year, the internal income totaled just Rs 2.86 billion.

Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning, Mahendra KC, reported that for the fiscal year 2022-23, the internal revenue collection was Rs 2.24 billion, representing 94.8 percent of the targeted revenue.

For the fiscal year 2023-24, the internal revenue collection amounted to Rs 61.97 million, which is 74.10 percent of the target.

The total budget for the Karnali provincial government over the past six years was Rs 66.66 billion. Of this, 37.46 percent was allocated for current expenditures and 62.54 percent for capital expenditures, according to Minister KC.

He noted that 62.71 percent of the allocation was spent on operational expenses and 55.01 percent on capital expenses, with an overall spending rate of 57.90 percent.

With only one month remaining in the current fiscal year, the government’s budget implementation remains weak.

Presenting the next year’s budget in Parliament, Minister KC highlighted that expenditure up to the end of May 2023-24 was 49.38 percent for operational costs and 29.87 percent for capital costs, averaging 37.93 percent overall.

From fiscal year 2018-19 to 2023-24, Karnali received a total of Rs 27.52 billion from the federal government in conditional, supplementary, and special grants.
