Postage stamps printed domestically after 64-year hiatus

KATHMANDU: In a historic development, the government has successfully printed postage stamps within the country after a hiatus of 64 years.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, officiated the first day cancellation mark on 11 varieties of postage stamps, which were produced at the Janak Education Materials Centre.

The Department of Postal Service released these postage stamps featuring images of notable figures such as martyr Rambriksha Yadav, leftist leader Sahana Pradhan, literary icon Netra Lal Paudel, democratic advocate Kami Budha, Shreebala Tripurasundari Devi Temple, five medicinal herbs including ‘marethi,’ and the silver jubilee of Nai Publication.

Pradip Adhikari, the Director-General of the Department, revealed that 8 million copies of postage stamps depicting national figures, medicinal herbs, and religious sites were printed.

This marks a significant shift from the previous practice of outsourcing postage stamp printing to countries like India, Indonesia, and Latvia.

Minister Sharma highlighted the stamps’ role in educating the current generation about the country’s pivotal figures, landmarks, and historical events.

Former minister Dinanath Sharma commended the government’s decision to print postage stamps showcasing individuals who played key roles in various political movements that shaped the nation.

Expressing a similar sentiment, former minister Ram Kumari Jhankri pointed out that the present generation could draw inspiration from the contributions made by previous generations in establishing the federal republic in Nepal.

This domestic production of postage stamps symbolizes a noteworthy step towards self-sufficiency and national pride.
