KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed deep concern over the damage caused by recent floods, landslides, and inundation, stressing the government’s commitment to swiftly begin reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts through an integrated safe settlement plan.

While receiving a memorandum today from an all-party delegation from Khotang at his official residence in Baluwatar, the Prime Minister assured that Thursday’s meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Cabinet will decide on immediate relief measures, including temporary housing and bridge construction.

He mentioned that due to floods and landslides, various roads connecting Kathmandu were blocked and the roads were put into operation temporarily faster than expected.

Despite budget constraints, Prime Minister Oli stressed the importance of focusing on reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts through the nation’s own resources, rather than relying on external aid as much as possible.

The delegation briefed the Prime Minister on the situation in Khotang, particularly highlighting the loss of the district’s only motorable bridge over the Sunkoshi River at Foksingtar. The bridge, which connected the district to the provincial capital through the Terai region, was swept away by the floods just two years after its construction.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, along with parliamentarians Ram Kumar Rai and Saraswati Bajimaya, Koshi Province MPs, and Tirtha Raj Bhattarai, the mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality, according to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
