CHITWAN: A total of 386 cases of Scrub Typhus have been confirmed in various hospitals throughout Chitwan district since mid-July.

The infection was identified after testing 2,144 individuals suspected of having the disease, according to Bimal Patel, a Public Health Officer at the Chitwan Public Health Office.

Patel noted that 196 of those infected were residents of Chitwan district, while the others came from outside the area.

During this time, there has been one reported death due to the mite-borne illness.

The highest number of cases was reported in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, with 90 cases.

Other municipalities recorded 33 cases in Ratnanagar, 20 in Rapti, 17 in Khairahani, 11 in Kalika, 7 in Madi, and 18 in Icchakamana Rural Municipality, as stated by the Public Health Office in Chitwan.

Scrub Typhus is caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is transmitted to humans through bites from infected mites (chiggers).

Common symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, body aches, and rashes.

Officer Patel advised local residents to take preventive measures against the infection, including avoiding overgrown areas, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and steering clear of rats and potentially infected animals to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
