50 climate activists unite to launch nationwide campaign for environmental justice

KATHMANDU: Fifty activists working in the environmental justice sector have launched a nationwide campaign aimed at mitigating climate change risks and promoting environmentally friendly festivals.

The campaign was announced during a program organized in Kathmandu by the Sath Sathai Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Forest and Environment.

The activists signed a collective commitment letter that outlines five key pledges: reducing waste, minimizing plastic use, recycling and reusing goods, and raising public awareness to preserve the environment.

Foundation Chairperson Prajita Karki emphasized that the campaign would focus on making festivals, including Teej, more environmentally friendly.

“Women are leading the change for a greener Teej,” Karki said, referring to the government’s “Green – Women Leading the Change” program, which aligns with the campaign’s goals.

The campaign, which takes into account the environmental aspects of the upcoming Teej festival, aims to promote sustainable practices during the celebrations.

The initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts over the past three years to address climate change and its impacts across various provinces in Nepal.

Prominent activists involved in the campaign include Bhumika Shrestha, Rekha Thapa, Sunita Baral, Bina Lama, Prada Karki, Shraddha Shrestha, Nima Gyaljen Sherpa, Mitra Jirel, Renu Devi Sah, Sujan Kumari Bardewa, Rojina Pradhan Rai, Srichha Pradhan, Liberty Bhandari, Rina Chaudhary, Asmita Bade, Gaura Nepali, Smriti Sharma, Devika Rai, Krishna Karki, Sita Mijar, Uma Pradhan, Joni Mainali, Bimala Tumkhewa, Binita Kathayat, Usha Kiran Bhandari, Anjila Subba, Indu Barma, Aruna Sah, Parbata Chaudhary, and Ranju Darshana, among others.
