Dudh Koshi Flood: Bad weather halts helicopter rescue operations from Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: A massive flood, likely caused by a glacier lake burst, has struck the Thame region of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district on Friday.

Over 70 percent of houses in Thame village have reportedly been inundated, with many completely destroyed.

Jagat Prasad Bhusal, the Chief Executive Officer of the rural municipality, stated that the flood was likely triggered by the burst of a glacier lake in the Tashi Lapcha region.

“So far, no human casualties have been reported, but some people are reportedly stranded in the river,” Bhusal said.

Rescue operations are underway, but attempts to deploy helicopters from Kathmandu have been unsuccessful due to bad weather.

The district administration office has mobilized security personnel to assist in the rescue efforts, according to Bhusal.
