Simaltal Landslide: Coordination with Indian districts for search of missing buses and passengers

CHITWAN: Coordination has been established with bordering Indian districts to aid in the search for the missing buses and passengers affected by the landslide at Simaltal along the Narayangadh-Muglin road section.

Authorities suspect that some bodies may have been washed away into India after several bodies of missing passengers were found in the Narayani River near the Indian border.

Chief District Officer of Chitwan, Indra Dev Yadav, stated that coordination was made with the District Magistrates (DM) of Maharajgunj district in Uttar Pradesh and West Champaran in Bihar State.

Both DMs were requested to report any bodies found in the river, as the bodies might have been carried towards India after reaching the Gandak Barrage.

The Trishuli River flows towards India via Tribeni after joining the Narayani River.

The landslide occurred on July 12, sweeping away two buses—one heading towards Kathmandu from Birgunj and another heading towards Gaur from Kathmandu—into the Trishuli River. Out of the 65 passengers on board, three managed to save their lives while 62 remain missing.

As of today, bodies of 15 passengers have been recovered.

A task force formed by the Home Ministry will conduct an onsite study of the incident on Wednesday.
