KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has stated that his party will not yield to intimidation from any political entity.
Addressing a gathering in Kathmandu on Thursday, Koirala emphasized the Nepali Congress’s resilience against attempts to coerce or threaten it.
He underscored that neither the warnings from the monarchy nor the recent admonitions from other political factions would deter the party from its course.
The remarks come in response to CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli’s caution to the Nepali Congress against leveling accusations.
Referring to this, Koirala reiterated the NC’s steadfast stance, emphasizing that the party remains undeterred by any form of coercion or intimidation from political adversaries.
Koirala remarked on the complexity of the current political landscape, criticizing the ruling parties for their handling of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane’s statements.
He clarified that while the Congress expects its concerns to be addressed, it upholds the principle of free speech and encourages dialogue.
Reflecting on the evolving political scenario, Koirala advocated for the preservation of Nepal’s parliamentary system, cautioning against a shift towards direct executive governance.
He accused the CPN-UML of attempting to manipulate constitutional provisions to consolidate power.
“In matters of satisfaction, dialogue remains open; however, if necessary, we will voice our concerns later,” Koirala asserted.
“The obstruction of Parliament was a measure to spotlight our reservations. While it raises questions about democratic norms, the urgency of the situation cannot be ignored,” he stated.
He further highlighted the demand for accountability within the government, particularly regarding allegations against Home Minister Lamichhane.
Koirala emphasized the need for an impartial investigation, expressing dismay over the reluctance of ruling party allies to address the issue adequately.
“The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated. The misappropriation of funds, as witnessed in recent scandals, demands swift and decisive action,” Koirala concluded.
