KATHMANDU: The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) may experience a temporary closure lasting four to five days as construction work is set to connect the ‘taxiway’ to the runway.

The ongoing Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project, led by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, is focused on constructing an apron for parking, a hangar for maintenance, and a parallel taxiway on the north side of the runway.

Simultaneously, work is progressing on a taxiway on the south side.

Dipendra Shrestha, chief engineer of the project, explained the delicate nature of the task, involving digging a four-meter deep hole 75 meters from the runway on both sides.

He emphasized the sensitivity of the operation, stating, “If it seems that it will take more time, the runway will have to be closed,” and added that notice has been issued in advance.

Shrestha mentioned that the closure, whether partial or complete, might last 8 to 10 hours under normal circumstances.

However, adverse conditions could extend the closure significantly.

Efforts are being made to minimize the downtime during this critical phase of runway and taxiway connection.

In the event of an extended closure, airlines operating at the airport will provide advance notice to passengers.

The entire project, including the completion of the taxiway, is expected to take an additional 3/4 months, with the work scheduled to conclude between November 2024 and January 2025.

Passengers and stakeholders have been urged to stay informed about potential disruptions during this period.
