Election Commission proposes December 1 for local by-elections
The Election Commission (EC) has proposed scheduling by-elections for vacant local positions on December 1, which falls on a Sunday.
On the same day, Chief Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapalia and other officials met with Prime Minister Oli and proposed the date.
The by-elections will address vacancies for the remaining terms of 41 local representatives, including the two heads of currently vacant district coordination committees.
NOC cuts petrol and diesel prices
The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a decrease in the prices of petrol and diesel.
This adjustment follows a reduction in fuel prices from the Indian Oil Corporation.
As a result, the new price for petrol has been reduced by Rs 4 per liter, and the price for diesel and kerosene has dropped by Rs 5 per liter.
Under the new pricing structure, the cost of petrol is Rs 156.50 per liter in the first category, Rs 158 in the second category, and Rs 159 in the third category.
Indrajatra festival begins in Kathmandu today
Indrajatra, one of the major festivals observed in Kathmandu Valley, begins today.
The festival is celebrated by worshiping Indra, revered as the god of rain and good times. It is called Yenya Punhi among the Newar community.
The festival begins after a pole with Indra dwaja or flag is erected in front of Hanumandhoka in Basantapur.
It is celebrated for eight days with various dances, chariot processions and worshipping of gods and goddesses.
CPN-UML denies move to oust Deputy Speaker Rana
The ruling CPN-UML has reiterated its position that Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar is not being asked to resign, nor is there any effort to remove her from her position.
Mahesh Bartaula, the chief whip of the UML parliamentary party, asserted that the ruling parties have not requested Deputy Speaker Rana’s resignation.
Speaking to the media after a meeting of chief whips convened by Speaker Devraj Ghimire on Sunday, Bartaula criticized the main opposition Maoist Center and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) for targeting the Deputy Speaker.
Gold price sets new record
Gold price set a new record in the domestic market today.
With the rise of Rs 500 per tola (11.66 grams) today, the opening day of the week, its price reached an all-time high to be traded at Rs 156,800 per tola.
According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealer’s Association, the price of hallmark gold was Rs 156,300 on Friday, the last trading day of the week.
Today’s price was the highest in the domestic market to date.
Likewise, silver has traded at Rs 1,900 today.
Joint drill of Nepali and US security forces on Disaster Response begins
The fourth edition of the joint military drill between the Nepali and US security forces started today.
The exercise will see an exchange of knowledge regarding the methods and procedures to be adopted to make post-disaster search and rescue effective.
The joint drill will be held in Kathmandu, Makwanpur and Dhading districts, according to Nepal Army, Directorate of Public Relations and Information.
CIAA’s works need to be made transparent and effective: President Paudel
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) submitted its Report for Fiscal Year 2080/81 (2023/24) to President Ram Chandra Paudel today.
CIAA Chief Commissioner Prem Kumar Rai handed the Report to the Head of State at a ceremony held at the Office of the President, Rashtrapati Bhawan in Shital Niwas.
Receiving the Report, President Paudel said making works like the identification of corruption-related offences, investigating them and prosecution scientific, fact-based and result-oriented was more important in the context of maintaining good governance.
Efforts underway to strengthen both organizations of police: Home Minister
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said the government continues to take measures to strengthen both organizations of police: Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF).
In his address to a graduation ceremony of the APF basic training for assistant inspectors at the APF Training Centre today, the Home Minister said the process is in progress to amend existing relevant acts and laws as per the need of time.
B’desh Ambassador Choudhary holds meeting with Energy Minister Khadka
Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Salahuddin Noman Choudhary held a courtesy meeting today with Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka.
According to the Minister Khadka’s Secretariat, the meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, focused on various issues related to energy cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh.
Minister Khadka highlighted the vast potential of hydropower in Nepal and the growing energy needs of Bangladesh.
