Tundikhel stampede update: 16 injured in stampede during Maghi celebration

KATHMANDU: Sixteen people were injured while trying to navigate through the dense crowd at the overcrowded Tundikhel in Kathmandu on Monday.

According to Kathmandu police, the assembly of people at Tundikhel to celebrate the Maghi and Maghe Sankranti programs, separately organized by the Tharu and Magar communities, led to a stampede, resulting in 16 injuries.

SP Kumud Dhungel, the spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, mentioned that the injured 16 individuals have been promptly taken to the National Trauma Center for treatment, and their condition is reported to be normal.

SP Dhungel pointed out the complex situation created by a large influx of people both entering and exiting resulted in congestion at the Tundikhel gate and caused the stampede.
