Former President Bhandari invited to China amid talk of a comeback in active politics

KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari is set to visit China amid speculation that she is preparing to re-enter active politics.

Since completing her two terms as President, Bhandari has been living a ‘retired’ life.

She received an invitation from the Chinese Communist Party (CPC).

While the trip is confirmed, the exact date has not been determined.

A close source revealed, “It is certain that she will visit China, but the date has not been fixed.”

Bhandari is expected to travel to China within a month.

Recently, she has been actively participating in various public events and internal meetings.

Formerly the Vice Chairperson of CPN-UML before becoming the President, she re-engaged with UML activities after nine years, notably attending a UML program recently.

She was the chief guest at the program while UML Chairman KP Oli was a special speaker.

Analysts suggest that Bhandari’s increased public engagements, her calls for communist unity, and her participation in party programs indicate her return to politics.

During her presidency, Bhandari did not intervene in the then Nepal Communist Party split, although she did remind the then Prime Ministers Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda of their responsibilities.

After her presidency, Bhandari confirmed she would return to active politics without state-provided housing and vehicle facilities, but she has not disclosed her plans within the party. Opinions within the UML are divided on her return to active politics.

UML Chairman Oli is reportedly reluctant about her return as he has dismissed the possibility of Bhandari rejoining active politics during a press conference at the UML party office in Chyasal.

Some argue that the respect for former presidents diminishes if they re-enter active politics.

A faction within the UML, including some second and third-generation members, supports Bhandari’s return to active politics.

Political circles speculate that China views Bhandari as a suitable figure to unite Nepal’s communists.

Her upcoming visit to China, a country known for promoting communist unity in Nepal, is seen as significant.
