KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, who has previously claimed no involvement with the cooperative aside from his ex-wife’s connection, has disclosed that he repaid a loan of Rs 81 lakh to the Miteri Saving and Credit Cooperative in Mahalakshmishan, Lalitpur.

Gurung has acknowledged settling the loan taken in his name.

Kumbharaj Gurung, Chairman of Miteri Savings and Loan Cooperative Society, confirmed to Khabarhub that Dhanraj made the payment of Rs 8.1 million May 19.

Khabarhub has obtained a receipt confirming this payment.

Kumbharaj Gurung stated that no additional payments have been made since then.

He mentioned that while Dhanraj and his ex-wife Jyoti had borrowed approximately Rs 14 billion from the Cooperative, they are now unreachable.

Previously, Kumbharaj had testified to the Parliamentary Special Investigation Committee on Cooperative Fraud, implicating Congress Vice President Gurung in the alleged financial misconduct.

Despite Dhanraj’s ex-wife claiming responsibility for the loan, Kumbharaj insists that Dhanraj transferred Rs 8.1 million to the Cooperative’s account last May.

Kumbharaj criticized allegations that he had sent Jyoti abroad, describing them as false accusations intended to mislead.

Complaint to the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry

Dhanraj and Jyoti have lodged a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) and the Parliamentary Committee, chaired by UML MP Surya Bahadur Thapa, regarding the non-payment of Rs 14.81 billion borrowed from the Cooperative.

A member of the Cooperative Inquiry Parliamentary Committee noted that during the 44th meeting, Kumbharaj confirmed Dhanraj had made some payments.

However, he also stated that a substantial amount of money remains unpaid.

Kumbharaj has lodged a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) of Nepal Police against five individuals, including Jyoti Gurung, alleging embezzlement.

Dhanraj and Jyoti seek justice, alleging that the situation has caused them significant distress.

They have urged the parliamentary committee and the government to address their concerns.

Dhanraj has countered accusations of misappropriating funds and sending his wife abroad, asserting that he has been divorced since 2020 and denying involvement in the alleged misconduct.

He criticized the portrayal of his actions and those of his wife, accusing others of attempting to tarnish his reputation.

On the other hand, Kumbharaj claimed that powerful figures have conspired against him, leading to his current predicament.

He alleged that the ongoing issues stem from influential individuals protecting their interests.

Kumbharaj contends that much of what Dhanraj claims is inaccurate, maintaining that his statements are largely incorrect.

Complaint filed against five individuals, including Jyoti Gurung, in embezzlement case

Kumbharaj has lodged a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) of Nepal Police against five individuals, including Jyoti Gurung, alleging embezzlement.

The complaint, filed by Bodh Bikram Thapa, Secretary of Miteri Savings and Credit Cooperative, targets Nepali Congress Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, his ex-wife Jyoti, Sujan Shakya, Hitman Thapa, and Prakash Thapa.

The latter four were employees at the cooperative.

Previously, Kumbharaj had testified to the Parliamentary Special Investigation Committee on Cooperative Fraud, implicating Congress Vice President Gurung in the alleged financial misconduct.

He claimed that Jyoti and Dhanraj had agreed to return approximately Rs 15 crore that was embezzled.

As of now, Kumbharaj stated that Rs 81 lakh had been repaid according to the agreement.
