KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Constitutional Council (CC) is taking place today.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the meeting is taking place at 5 pm today.

Prime Minister KP Oli had initially called for a meeting of the Constitutional Council on Wednesday. However, that meeting was adjourned and rescheduled for today.

According to the Constitution of Nepal, the Prime Minister serves as the Chairman of the Constitutional Council.

The Council also includes the Chief Justice, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the leader of the main opposition in the House of Representatives, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

In preparation for today’s meeting, the Prime Minister has consulted with former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, leader of the opposition party and Chairman of the Maoist Center; and Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the Congress.

Sources indicate that today’s meeting will focus on discussing the recommendation of a new Chief Justice.

The Judicial Council has submitted the names of eight judges to the Constitutional Council.

The Constitutional Council is tasked with recommending one of these eight candidates for the position of Chief Justice.

The President will then appoint the Chief Justice following approval by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

Current Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha is set to retire soon due to the age limit.

The Constitution stipulates that the appointment process for the new Chief Justice should commence one month before the incumbent’s retirement.

Additionally, today’s meeting is expected to address the filling of vacancies in various constitutional bodies.
