Monsoon-related disaster claims 173 lives

Incessant rains this year have led to the deaths of 173 people across the country from various natural disasters, including floods and landslides. The casualties are distributed as follows: three in Kathmandu Valley, 26 in Koshi Province, seven in Madhes Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, eight in Karnali Province, and 11 in Sudurpaschim Province. Additionally, the disasters have resulted in injuries to 11 people in Kathmandu Valley, 37 in Koshi Province, 11 in Madhes Province, 23 in Bagmati Province, 46 in Gandaki Province, 13 in Lumbini Province, 54 in Karnali Province, and 28 in Sudurpaschim Province, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki.

Road subsidence disrupts transportation at Daunne section of East-West Highway 

Transportation at Daunne in Nawalpur was disrupted last night due to road subsidence. Only one-way traffic is currently allowed on the Daunne section of the East-West Highway as repair work is underway. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bed Bahadur Paudel, the road caved in at Daunne, located in Binay Triveni Rural Municipality-2.

Gold price hits all-time high

The price of gold has surged by 2,100 rupees today, reaching a new all-time high. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the fine gold is traded at Rs 150,800 per tola today. It should be noted that gold prices had surged to a new record high on August 5 with fine gold reaching Rs 150,000 per tola. Additionally, the price of silver increased by 25 rupees per tola, with silver trading at 1,740 rupees today.

Govt invites public complaints on proposed ambassadors

The government has invited public complaints regarding the 18 ambassadors recently proposed for various countries. A meeting of the parliamentary hearing committee on Tuesday decided to open a 10-day window for the public to submit complaints against the proposed envoys. The committee will review any complaints received during this period. Following the review, a date will be set for the final hearing of the ambassadorial nominees.

Chaos erupts in parliament after Speaker interrupts RSP lawmaker

Parliamentary proceedings descended into chaos after opposition lawmakers protested Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire’s decision to interrupt Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Hari Dhakal during his speech. The disruption occurred when Speaker Ghimire stopped Dhakal as he was addressing issues related to road and air accidents. Dhakal had requested time to discuss transportation safety but began speaking about the outstanding dues of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Speaker Ghimire interrupted and disconnected Dhakal’s microphone, stating that the lawmaker had deviated from the agreed topic. In response, lawmakers from the RSP and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) obstructed the parliamentary proceedings, arguing that the Speaker’s actions infringed on their rights.

Dalit activist Khagendra Sunar arrested in Kathmandu

Dalit activist Khagendra Sunar has been arrested while staging a symbolic protest in Kathmandu. Sunar had been demonstrating at Maitighar, wrapping himself in approximately 2 kilograms of metal chains, to demand equality and inclusion in governmental and political appointments. According to the police, Sunar was arrested after attempting to enter the federal parliament building.

Former DIG Kharel files corruption case against NEA Managing Director Ghising

Former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Ramesh Kharel, has filed a corruption case against the Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Kul Man Ghising. Kharel submitted the case to the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) today, accusing Ghising of corruption related to Power Purchase Agreements. Kharel has revealed the details about the case on his social media accounts.

NEPSE index experiences minor drop of 0.27 percent

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) Index ended today at 2,923.46 points, reflecting a decrease of 8.18 points, or 0.27%, compared to the previous day. This minor drop follows a strong previous session where the index had risen by 70.81 points, demonstrating continued positive momentum. The trading day commenced with the index at 2,947.7 points. During the day, it varied between an intraday low of 2,891.43 points and a high of 2,971.69 points before closing at the final value. Trading activity was robust, with 332 stocks traded through 241,665 transactions, totaling 52,764,832 shares and generating a notable turnover of Rs. 21.15 billion.

Health Minister Paudel announces to establish Organ Transplant Centers in all seven provinces

Health Minister Pradip Paudel has announced plans to establish Human Organ Transplant Centers in all seven provinces of Nepal. During an event at the Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Center in Bhaktapur, organized to mark World Organ Donation Day, Minister Paudel emphasized that this initiative is part of his recently unveiled work plan. “The initiative will begin soon in Koshi Province,” he stated, adding that the new transplant centers will operate as branches of the Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Center.

Writ petition filed against TRC Bill at Supreme Court

As the government prepares to table the Committee’s Report on the Investigation of Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Third Amendment) Bill, 2081 in parliament, a writ petition has been filed against the bill at the Supreme Court. Advocate Shyam Krishna Maskey submitted the writ petition, arguing that certain provisions in the bill violate international treaties and practices. Maskey also contends that these points may further victimize those already affected.

TRC Bill presented to House of Representatives

The Committee’s Report on the Investigation of Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Third Amendment) Bill, 2081, has been tabled in the House of Representatives (HoR). Bimala Subedi, Chairperson of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee, presented the bill during the parliamentary session on Tuesday. The bill was previously approved by the committee on August 8.

Arrest warrant issued for Chairperson of Biruwa RM in cooperative fraud case

An arrest warrant has been issued for Surya Bahadur Kuwar, the Chairperson of Biruwa Rural Municipality (RM), in connection with a cooperative fraud case. The District Court of Syangja issued the warrant on Tuesday. Kuwar is accused of being involved in irregularities during his tenure as secretary of the Syangja-based Surya Savings and Credit Cooperative, according to the police.

Church Boys United eliminated from AFC Challenge League after defeat to Paro FC

Nepali league champions Church Boys United have been eliminated from the AFC Challenge League after being defeated by Bhutanese team Paro FC in the playoffs today. In the match held at Dashrath Stadium in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, Paro FC secured a 2-1 victory over Church Boys United, earning a place in the group stage of the League.

PM Oli invited to Asian Cooperation Dialogue in Qatar

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been invited to attend the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) scheduled to be held in Qatar this October. Mishaal Bin Mohamed Ali Al-Ansari, the Qatari Ambassador to Nepal, extended the invitation to PM Oli during a meeting at Singha Durbar today. Nepal has been a member of the ACD since 2016 and is one of 35 countries participating in the dialogue.

Cabinet approves action plan for Pokhara and Gautam Buddha International Airports

The government has approved a comprehensive plan of action for overall reforms in the civil aviation sector. The Council of Ministers, in its meeting on August 12, also approved specific action plans for the operation of Gautam Buddha International Airport and Pokhara International Airport, according to Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung. Minister Gurung made the announcement during a news conference on Tuesday at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
