KATHMANDU: The United States has denied any involvement in the recent ousting of Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina-led government.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refuted reports suggesting U.S. involvement, calling them “rumors” and “simply false.”
When asked about the alleged involvement, Secretary Jean-Pierre stated, “We have had no involvement at all. Any reports that the United States government was involved in these events are rumors and are simply false. This is a choice for and by the Bangladeshi people. We believe that the Bangladeshi people should determine the future of their government. Any allegations, as I have said and will continue to say, are not true.”
The ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina followed a mass uprising, which escalated from student-led protests against a quota system for government jobs into a broader rebellion.
The protests, which led to clashes with government forces and hundreds of deaths, eventually forced Hasina to step down and flee the country.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has since taken over as the interim leader of Bangladesh.
