Government ready to lift TikTok ban if legal requirements met

KATHMANDU: The Nepalese government is currently working to bring TikTok, a popular social media platform, into compliance with Nepal’s legal framework.

Speaking at the Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee meeting under the National Assembly, Communication Minister and government spokesperson Rekha Sharma stated that the government is willing to lift the ban on TikTok if it adheres to the country’s legal requirements.

Minister Sharma clarified that the government’s issue is not with TikTok itself but with the content posted on the platform.

She also mentioned that the government will soon introduce the Social Media Bill.

In response to the ban, TikTok had earlier pledged to strictly follow Nepal’s legal processes, establish direct communication channels for content-related discussions, implement content filtering for Nepali users, conduct nationwide initiatives on internet safety and digital literacy, and prioritize the production of educational content for students.

The decision to ban TikTok was made during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on November 13, due to concerns over social harmony disruptions, numerous cases against public decency, and the platform’s alleged lack of cooperation in crime prevention and prosecution efforts.
