Heatwave forces extension of school closures in Birgunj

BIRGUNJ: As scorching temperatures persist in the Tarai region, the Birgunj Metropolitan City has announced an additional three-day closure for schools.

The decision comes amidst concerns over the prolonged heatwave’s impact on daily life.

Chief Administrative Officer of Birgunj Metropolitan City, Matrika Bhattarai, stated that the extended summer holiday, from today until June 16, aims to safeguard children’s health amid escalating heat levels.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned of further temperature spikes in the region, prompting the metropolis to take precautionary measures.

Previously, the metropolis had instructed schools to conclude classes by 10:30 am to mitigate heat-related risks.

However, with students experiencing fainting spells even during morning sessions, the decision to extend the holiday was deemed necessary.

The Metropolitan City’s Education Committee, in a meeting held on May 27, initially sanctioned a summer break from May 29 to 31.

Within the Birgunj metropolis, there are a total of 92 community and 138 private schools. These include 21 secondary, 15 basic, 55 primary, and one pre-primary institution.

Wednesday saw the mercury soaring to 38.7 degrees Celsius in Birgunj.

The Department of Meteorology has issued advisories, warning of heightened heat conditions, particularly in the central and western Tarai regions.
