KATHMANDU: Yogesh Bhattarai, Secretary of CPN-UML, has voiced concerns over the government’s inadequate allocation for relief and rescue efforts in the face of natural disasters.
Speaking during a meeting of the the House of Representatives on Thursday, Bhattarai highlighted the impact of climate change on weather-related disasters, lamenting the insufficient budgetary provisions made by the government for their mitigation.
“The government’s preparedness falls short of expectations,” remarked Bhattarai.
“With the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority receiving an annual budget of Rs 180 crores, of which 150 crores are absorbed by salaries and allowances, a mere 3 crores remain for operational tasks. This is untenable,” he stated.
Despite adverse conditions, the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police continue their rescue operations.
Bhattarai urged the government to undertake nationwide disaster preparedness measures promptly.
He emphasized the need to equip security agencies adequately with tools and resources for effective post-disaster relief and rescue operations.
