Meet Narayan Prasad Dahal, newly elected chairperson of the National Assembly

KATHMANDU: Narayan Prasad Dahal, widely known as ‘Saral’ within Maoist circles, has been elected as the Chairperson of the National Assembly in Tuesday’s election.

Born on March 29, 1956, in Dhikurpokhari, Kaski, Dahal, 68, is the eldest child of Deurupa Dahal and Kul Prasad Dahal. He has a rich political background and is credited for his significant role in the success of the Maoist People’s War.

Dahal’s affinity for Communist ideology developed during his youth, leading to active involvement in politics since his student days.

His commitment to the Maoist cause was evident through his participation in the People’s War, where he played a crucial role in its institutional strengthening and resource mobilization, even during his time abroad.

Throughout his political journey, Dahal held various leadership positions within organizations such as the Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekata Samaj, eventually becoming its Chairperson.

He notably contributed to the publication of the Nepali Ekata Prakashan, fostering political awareness and unity among Nepalis in India.

Transitioning to full-time Communist party membership, Dahal became a central member of the Maoist party.

He spent 18 years fulfilling party responsibilities in Nepal and India, serving in multiple capacities within the All India Ekata Samaj and the party.

Returning to Nepal during the peak of the People’s War, Dahal assumed important roles assigned by the party in the Bheri-Karnali region.

He also served as the party’s district in-charge in Kaski and later took on responsibilities in the Kathmandu Valley and adjacent districts.

Dahal is revered as a leader deeply connected with the people, emphasizing the importance of implementing a rule of law within the party.
