SALLERI: The harsh winter conditions have compelled the closure of more than 100 community schools in Solukhumbu.
Out of the total 267 community schools in the district, 101 have been shut down due to the extreme cold, according to Birama Kumari Khadka, an official from the Solukhumbu District Education and Coordination Unit.
The affected schools are spread across seven of the eight local levels in the district. Additionally, some other schools are considering declaring winter holidays due to the challenging weather conditions.
In Solu Dudhkunda Municipality, 58 out of 62 community schools have closed, along with 14 out of 17 schools in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, and seven out of 51 schools in Thulung Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality.
Furthermore, eight out of 19 schools in Mahakulung Rural Municipality and six out of 22 schools in Likhupike Rural Municipality have been forced to close.
The impact extends to four out of 36 schools in Nechasalyan Rural Municipality and four out of 39 schools in Madhyadudhkoshi Rural Municipality.
Chet Bahadur Magar, Principal of PK Secondary School in Loding, mentioned that the school has been closed since the last week of December due to the difficulty faced by both teachers and students in commuting regularly.
Schools in the upper Khumbu region of the district are also affected, with winter vacation being announced after freezing temperatures followed the rain in the high mountainous areas, according to Tilak Rasaili, a teacher at Khumjung Secondary School.
However, schools in Sotang Rural Municipality are operating as usual, as it is a relatively warmer area. Khilraj Basnet, the Chair of the rural municipality, confirmed that none of the schools in Sotang are closed due to the milder climate in the region.
