KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the release of controversial medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai on bail in a cybercrime case.

The court, under the bench of Judge Bishnu Prasad Awasti, set the bail amount at 40,000 rupees for Prasai’s release. He had been arrested on November 19 following allegations that he falsely claimed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had invested funds from Nepal into Cambodia.

Prasai was taken into custody under charges of electronic transaction offenses as per the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008.

Despite the court’s order for bail, Prasai will remain in custody. According to Hobindra Bogati, spokesperson for the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Prasai is also under investigation for criminal breach of trust, which prevents his immediate release.

While the cybercrime charge permits his release on bail, the ongoing probe into the criminal breach of trust case requires him to remain in detention, Bogati clarified.
