Japan hands over Children’s Home in Humla

KATHMANDU: A handover ceremony for the newly constructed children’s home building in Humla District, supported by Japan, took place on December 11.

Tamura Takahiro, Charge d’Affairs ad interim of the Embassy of Japan to Nepal, attended the event.

The project, titled The Project for the Construction of a Children’s Home in Humla District, was funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) with a contribution of USD 124,267 (approximately NPR 13.5 million).

During the ceremony, Tamura congratulated and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of all those involved in the successful completion of the project.

He emphasized that the new facility will significantly improve the welfare of children who have lost family protection in the district.

He also expressed hope that the building will be well-maintained and utilized effectively by the local community for many years to come.

The project was implemented by the Rural Empowerment and Development Initiative, Humla (READI, Humla), a non-governmental organization founded in 2008.

READI had previously operated a children’s home in a rented building in Simikot, Humla, providing not only shelter but also educational support to children in need.

The newly constructed facility can now permanently accommodate up to 30 children and also serves as a training center for the local community.

The Embassy of Japan expressed its hope that this project would enhance the well-being of children in Humla and further strengthen the enduring friendship between Japan and Nepal.

Since its establishment in 1991, the GGP has funded over 200 projects in Nepal, aimed at directly benefiting communities at the grassroots level and supporting their socio-economic development.
