KATHMANDU: The 85th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and ex-President of the Nepali Congress (NC) Sushil Koirala is being observed today with various programs.

Koirala, born on 18 Shrawan 1997 BS, dedicated himself to politics after being inspired by BP Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister.

Under Koirala’s leadership, the Constitution was promulgated on September 20, 2015, with the support of all parties represented in the Constituent Assembly.

This achievement fulfilled the responsibility of drafting the constitution in line with the aspirations of the Nepali people, which had been underway since 2007 BS.

Koirala was known for his advocacy of truth and his simple lifestyle. As a key figure in the promulgation of the Constitution, he remained active in its effective implementation until the end of his life.

His role in political change over various periods has established him as a notable figure in Nepali politics.

On this International Youth Day, various programs will be held across the country in memory of the late leader.

Dr. Shashank Koirala, Chairperson of the Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation and former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, stated that strengthening the democratic system through the successful implementation of the constitution would be a fitting tribute to Koirala.

Established in 2073 BS, the Foundation acts as a think tank in fields such as education, health, sports, art, culture, human rights, women’s and children’s issues, and social welfare.

It also organizes various creative programs to honor Koirala’s contributions. Atul Koirala, the Foundation’s member secretary, emphasized the need for honest and ethical leadership like Koirala’s in today’s era.

Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba serves as the patron of the Foundation.
