KATHMANDU: Following Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s failure to secure a trust vote in the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting today, the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML (UML) are prepared to nominate UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli for the prime ministerial post.

President Ram Chandra Paudel has summoned parties to stake a claim to form a new government under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.

Speaking to media after the HoR meeting, NC Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak expressed confidence that the President would call on political parties to form a new government according to the precedent set by the Supreme Court.

This provision allows two or more political parties in parliament to form a government.

Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, another NC leader, confirmed that his party supports the proposal of UML Chair Oli as the new Prime Minister based on their agreement with UML.

Similarly, UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula stated that they are ready to present their proposal to the President for an Oli-led government, as per their agreement with NC.

However, CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Madhav Sapkota argued that the President should invoke Article 76 (3) of the Constitution.

Sapkota mentioned that his party would support a government formed under Article 76 (3) but would oppose a government led by UML Chair Oli.

PM Dahal has reportedly left to meet President Paudel.

Additionally, RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane declared that his party had worked earnestly for the country and its people while in government.

Now, the RSP intends to stay in opposition.

There is some disagreement among constitutional experts regarding the process for forming the new government.

Some advocate for Article 76 (2), which would result in KP Sharma Oli becoming the next Prime Minister, while others support Article 76 (3), which could lead to Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the Nepali Congress, becoming the next Prime Minister.
