KATHMANDU: Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Chairman of Nepal Socialist Party and former Prime Minister, has expressed his objection to being labeled an Indian agent.
Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Wednesday, organized to mark the party’s foundation day, Bhattarai highlighted that he initiated the formation of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) to resolve issues and renegotiate unequal treaties with India.
Despite his efforts, he has been labeled an Indian agent, which he finds unacceptable.
He pointed out the irony that while he, who seeks to resolve issues with India, is called an agent, those who bow to India for power are seen as nationalists, which has hindered the country’s progress.
Bhattarai clarified that he joined the communist party to end the monarchy, and after achieving that goal, he left.
He emphasized the need for an alternative political force to nullify the unequal treaties and agreements with India.
“I initiated the proposal to renegotiate treaties with India through the EPG. Now, I’m being called an Indian agent. Those who seek to resolve issues through dialogue and address outdated treaties from the British era are labeled agents, while those who bow to India for reaching to power are called nationalists? Can such a country progress?”
Bhattarai underscored the need for a new alternative force to correct these fundamental issues.
He also proposed the formation of a Janlokpal to promote good governance, arguing that the current anti-corruption bodies, like the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, cannot end corruption as political parties appoint their own people to these institutions.
